VCAP6-DTM Deployment Objective 5.1 – Configure/Capture/Deploy Reference and Endpoint CVDs

Create a reference image based on design requirements

To create new reference machine we need machine build and configure with View Mirage client installation. Machine is assigned to Pending Device and can be used to create referance image.

Capture reference CVD

In Mirage console under Inventory > Pending Devices right-click machine and select Create new Reference CVD machine.

Select Create Reference CVD for Base Layer capture and click Next

Select for first time creating Base layer Don’t use a Base Layer. Select Base Layer from list option can be use to apply updated or changes to existing base layer

Capture/Update base layer from a reference CVD

After creation of reference CVD we will created base layer.

From Common Wizards click Capture Base Layer

Select Use an existing reference CVD and click Next

From list of reference CVD select one to be use, click Next

Type Name and Description for new layer specify Version number, click Next

View Mirage will check if there is any compatibility issues and display here, if there are any issues comeback to reference machine to fix it. Click refresh button to run validation check again, click Next

At Summary page click Next

When login to reference machine we can see progress and information of current action

To update base layer with any changes made to reference machine (Security patches et.) we start from same Common Wizards page choosing Create Base Layer.

Go through 2 first windows exactly same as when creating new Base Layer.

At Capture Base Layer check  Update an exiting layer and select layer to update from list. Select if this is a minor or major update, Click Next and Finish.

From View Mirage console under Image Composer > Base Layer you can see two Layer first and update. Right click and choose Properties to see more info about Layer

Capture a reference CVD for application layers

Before we can start capture of Application layer we need to prepare reference machine as close to base layer as possible. Installing View Mirage client will register new reference machine under Pending Devices in Inventory.

From Common Wizards select Capture App Layer

From Select Pending Device window select CVD for App Layer, Click Next

At Summary conform setting and click Finish to start pre-recording

Open CVD reference machine console, VMware Mirage will display progress bar for pre-recording task

Once pre-recording completes VMware Mirage will inform that we should start installing application now.

After we finish installing application and rebooting machine if necessary, from Task Monitoring view in View Mirage console select and right-click our reference machine, choose finalize App Layer Capture.  Mirage will initialize post-installation scan to detect new application

After post scanning View Mirage will list all recorded application, click Next

Select to Create a new layer, type name and description as well Version number, click Next

On Summary window review all information and click Finish to save App layer

Deploy an application layer and/or a base layer from a reference CVD

To deploy base layer we need centralize endpoint or collection of endpoints. When View Mirage client is installed, machine is assigned to Pending Devices under Inventory in Mirage Console. Right click any machine and choose Centralize Endpoint. Machine will be move to Assigned Machine only then we can assign Base Layer to machine, to do this Common Wizards window click Assign Base Layer.

In Assign Base Layer choose CVD to which layer will be assigned and click Select, click Next

Select which Base Layer version you want to assign and click Next

At Compatibility window click Next and Finish at Summary

From within machine we can monitor progress of current action. View Mirage will ask to restart machine when is necessary.

To assign App Layer to endpoint from Common Wizards click Update App layers

Choose to which CVD assign App layer and click Select and Next

At Select App Layer window select application layer which you want to assign to endpoint and click “>” to move it to  Assigned layers  and click Next.

At Summery window click next and finish to start uploading layer to endpoint.

Configure and run dry-run reports

View Mirage offer build in reports to run. In View Mirage console under Reports select report type you want to run. Click green plus button to start.

Choose CVD against which you want to run Report and click Select and Next

Select Base layer for report, by default the assign base layer is selected, click Next
